One Man’s Wrestling Opinion
AEW Dynamite Preview 10-14
So once again we have the tag “A Huge Card” for tonight by the money mark Tony Khan. For the first time in history, we will see all four AEW titles defending in one show. Notice the FTW title is not part of this. So for those of you who thought that was a real title, this is the second time an officer of the company did not include it when talking about titles. Cody did it in his promo when he accepted Brodie Lee’s challenge. Now that we have that out of the way let’s move on. In this AEW Dynamite Review, I will look into each announced event for tonight.
Tonight’s card is very predictable, in my opinion, as they always are. To me, this ruins the matches when the winner is known prior to the match. For these matches to be worth it, I would have to rely on AEW to tell good stories which they have not shown they can either. To be fair WWE does this extremely poor as well. Which is why the Reigns/Uso angle is extremely surprising to me. But this is an AEW article. I am a fan who needs storylines, character building, and vignettes in my weekly TV shows. Leave the 20-minute matches for the PPV’s where they belong. But looking at tonight we could see two matches go over 20 minutes and in a two-hour show with only around 90 minutes of actual TV time that is half the show in just two matches.
Jon Moxley(c) ve Lance Archer AEW Heavyweight Championship Match
I think this match might have the most to talk about. Archer is getting his shot at Moxley from winning the Battle Royal at the last PPV. That same Battle Royal where Eddie Kingston did not technically get eliminated so that match did not have a real winner. Kingston got his shot and lost. More on that later. Now as Archer returns from Covid will we see a title change? I say no. But do you realize that since Moxley won the title on February 29th he has been on the losing side just once ironically in his first appearance with the title as Darby Allin’s partner against Chris Jericho and Sammy Guevara. But I want to talk about his most recent title defenses and how he was not booked strong in those matches.
On Sept 24th it was The Butcher who was never going to win that match or made to look strong. Prior to that was Eddie Kingston. Moxley won when the referee quickly rang the ball as Kingston was in a submission hold. Khan must be all in on this as Kingston keeps bringing it up and even was given an open contract from the owner which he gave to The Butcher. Then prior to that we have MJF at All Out. Moxley won when he used a banned hold to beat MJF. Interestingly MJF mentioned it once and then dropped it. In fact, MJF mentioned it in the same show that Kingston mentioned him getting screwed in the Battle Royal and it was in back-to-back segments. This was something pointed out by a lot of former wrestlers.
Darby Allin was before MJF and Darby was not going to beat Moxley for the title. Finally, we have Brian Cage. Cage the monster was in a submission move when Taz threw in the title. So Cage never tapped out. Does any of that make Moxley look strong? Now as for Lance Archer. He came in hot with Jake Roberts as his manager/coach. He straight-up murders Colt Cabana, Dustin Rhodes, and QT Marshall en route to the TNT Championship Tournament FInals against Cody where he loses. Since then we have not seen Archer on the show every week In fact most of his matches have been on Dark. So Archer lost all his heat and was buried by the Cody Express. Now AEW is trying to rehab him for what another burial?
I think Moxley wins this and ultimately drops the title to Kenny Omega at the next PPV. But here lies the problem. A clean win for Moxley buries Archer once again. If Moxley wins another match with a questionable finish or run in by Kingston then how does the champion look with yet another bad title win? The right call is for Archer to win the belt and carry it into 2021. But Khan will keep the strap on Moxley until Omega takes it off of him. I highly doubt Khan has Archer win the belt then lose it next month at the PPV.
FTR (c) vs The Best Friends AEW Tag Team Championship Match
This has to be the slowest moving angle between FTR and The Young Bucks. I am all for long-term storylines but when you drag something out this long we get stupid Weiney jokes which are not funny. Plus we have the FTR in a match where we know they are not winning. The Bucks are not funny or believable in this heel turn that is taking way too long. They are kicking referees, ring announcers, cameramen but not an actual person who can fight back. So where is the heat? Khan should be the next person they kick and we all know that Tony is dying to have a visible part on the show.
It used to be so easy for a face to turn heel. Just attack a babyface. That has always worked and will always work. Now if any of FTR, Best Friends, and the Bucks had any charisma or personality then this would be entertaining. But they don’t and it’s obvious.
There is no way Khan messes up his and Meltzer’s dream match of the FTR vs Young Bucks for the title at the next PPV. FTR wins.
Cody (c) vs Orange Cassidy TNT Championship Match
Oh Boy. Cody is the hand-selected champion by TNT because they love him. He buries Lance Archer en route to winning the title. Archer has not been the same since that match. Then he leaves to go and shoot a shitty TV show and he comes back and gets his title back. It’s good to be the EVP of the company. Oh and Brodie Lee gets buried for the second time since joining AEW in March. But we now have Tony Khan’s Golden Boy Orange Cassidy who answered Cody’s open challenge for tonight. Khan is going to push Cassidy down our throats until we accept that he is a star. But the problem is Orange Cassidy is not a star and he never will be.
I think Cassidy would be great in the mid-card level as a champion. I think of it as a more glorified Cruiserweight level. AEW has several wrestlers that would be great in that same level. But when you put these guys up against bigger wrestlers it does not look believable. Cody has been putting over a lot of the talent in matches with them but he still gets the win. This will be what happens tonight. Does anyone think that Khan will take the title off Brodie Lee and burying him in the process only to have Cody lose the title the very next week? Oh but if you ask Khan and the AEW stans they will say that Brodie Lee is not buried. But he is. Aside from that this match is between two big babyfaces.
Cody retains and will carry this title until Hollywood comes calling. There is a small part of me that thinks Cody could turn full-blown heel tonight and dropping the title in the process. That is because of the love Tony Khan has for Orange Cassidy.
Hikaru Shida (c) vs Big Swole AEW Women’s Championship Match
Really who cares about this Women’s Division. It’s a joke. Shida will be known as having a bad title reign due to no fault of her. These female wrestlers are just not ready for TV. This is why Thunder Rosa was brought in to wrestle on the show. The only fix is that AEW has to only use the female wrestlers who are ready and the rest have to remain on Dark which includes the Chief Bikini Officer.
Shida retains. I just can’t see Big Swole winning this match.
Clearly, MJF is going to try to take over the Inner Circle. Jericho is not really a heel anymore or rather he can’t get heel heat anymore. I feel that MJF and Sammy Guevara are working together to take control of the Inner Circle. Now do they all turn on Jericho who knows. I kind of feel that there is something we could do with MJF vs Wardlow. I am not sure if the turn happens tonight but it is coming.
Miro and Kip Sabian
So Miro and Kip are wrestling tonight and we know Miro can’t lose his second match on AEW TV. As I say each and every week. I won’t support Miro until he gets out of this ridiculous angle. Yes WWE screwed up with Miro. Big Time. But AEW took him from bad to worse. For Miro, it’s the same clown different circus.
AEW tries to make every TV Show like a mini PPV. So when anyone says AEW does not worry about ratings that’s a lie. This is the same reason why Khan was pushing any stat he could find when NXT won the ratings a few times earlier this year. So let’s not fool ourselves. This show just does not get new viewers. The matches all look the same with the flipping and flying and gymnastics they do in each match.
Plus the matches are mostly predictable and the attempts at comedy are just that attempts. They are not funny. Khan does not know how to book big men. There is rarely any heat during the matches.
I am not asking anyone to agree with me. You are free to like what you want to like. A lot of fans love AEW and that’s fine. But just don’t like it because it’s not WWE. And if you let a lot of what they are not doing right go unnoticed then you are doing them a disservice. I do want them to succeed and I treat them no differently than I do WWE.
