WRESTLE BLOG 1-30-19

Before I start my blog on Wrestling I saw something yesterday that hit home for me.  I was flipping the channels and came across the show Celebrity Wife Swap.  You know the premise of the show.  I remember seeing an episode featuring Ric Flair’s and Rowdy Roddy Piper’s wives. The show aired in June of 2013.  I don’t watch this show at all but only watched because of the icons that were on it.  It was very sad to me to see Kitty Piper be scared for Ric because of his partying and always picking up the tab and buying drinks for strangers because in his words that is all I know.  Then to see Ric’s first wife Beth come to see Kitty as they are old friends and how Kitty said to Beth that she was worried about him.  Something Beth had agreed with her about Ric’s hard living ways.  Beth had told Kitty about how Ric was not always like this.  He was a better father earlier in his life to their kids.  Doing some research Wendy who was his wife in the show was not his actual wife at the time the show was taped.  He was in the process of getting a divorce from his third wife.  He was living with Wendy and her 3 children.  Wendy loved the life as well but not to the same extent.  She tried to get Roddy to pamper his wife Kitty and their children a little more.  Not to get off track here.  The show ends when both Ric and Roddy meet up with their wives and talk about the past week without each other.  We see a classic Flair comment in the car ride to the meeting.  He said “I feel sorry for you.  When Roddy and I are in the same room there is no one else there.  There could be 300 people there.”  Classic Flair comment.

The one thing I really got out of it was the love Ric and Roddy have for each other.  Roddy said he is worried about Ric’s partying and spending money and that he needs to know who are his real friends.  Roddy is more frugal with his money and was leading a more simple life.  Roddy was sick already with cancer diagnosed years ago.  But I look at the two guys.  Roddy has since passed away and Ric’s hard partying ways finally caught up with him and he was very seriously ill and is lucky to be alive.  It’s hard to believe that he has changed his ways since he just craves the spotlight.  I don’t know about you but if I saw Flair in a bar I would go up to him and buy him a drink and ask him to start to tell stories and maybe share some of my own health issues.

Anyway on to the present day.

The big news is the status of Dean Ambrose.  The social compass has stated he is leaving WWE in April.  WWE has also confirmed this to be true.  We usually don’t see stuff like this to be out so publically.  Does that mean this is not true and just a work?  Who knows.  But there is no doubting that the character of Ambrose is not working.  Some are saying Dean hates to have his interviews pre scripted and he should be given more freedom.  Would WWE let him have an open mic?  That to me opens a huge can of worms.  If this is in fact true would the WWE be better served by getting something done contractually with Dean seeing that AEW is waiting in the wings to snatch him up?  Can you imagine if Dean appeared in Wrestlemania and then 2 days later is working at a rival company.  Is this the time to let a top well known talent leave when AEW can be the new WCW?  We will find out in the coming weeks to see how he is used on WWE TV.  It’s possible they just don’t know yet.  As we saw on this past Monday’s Raw where they teased an altercation with Triple H that would ultimately lead to a Wrestlemania match and they also had Nia Jax confront him.   Looks like the machine is on the fence.

As mentioned in prior posts the state of the women’s division is in great shape.  The Becky/Charlotte segment was very good.  Becky hard selling an injury and not wanting to take more time off to heal which will lead to Charlotte getting put into the Wrestlemania match with Ronda/Becky.  To me putting Charlotte into the Wrestlemania event lets another woman challenge Asuka at the big show.  That with the newly crowned Women’s tag team champions defending on the same night let’s at least 9 women in prominent matches at Wresltemania.  I still would like to see another women’s match that night perhaps something around the suddenly gaining steam 4 Horsemen angle.  In a span of 2 days we saw 3 of the 4 members of the stable to flash the 4 fingers with Sasha doing it after match at the rumble and Becky and Bailey flashing it to each other all in the immediate presence of Ronda or Ronnie.  The women’s division is bubbling over in talent now and the Four Horsemen angle would make this division white hot.  We all are expecting Becky to beat Ronda at Wrestlemania.  At least as of right now.  But could the WWE throw us a curve and have Ronda’s friends do a run in for her to retain the title at Mania?  Think about it.  Let’s say Flair and Becky start double teaming Ronda making it basically a two on one and then Ronda gets some help to win the match.  Becky and Flair can get on the same page to take care of business then address their problems.  It kind of makes sense.  This Ronda leaving rumor can just be planted to swerve everyone.

Bottom line is how do you get Flair and Becky on the same page because right now they hate each other.  And it would be even better to me if Ric comes back to take on the JJ Dillon role and maybe wishing on a star to have Heyman head up Ronda’s crew.   As much as we want it to be the Horsemen won’t be heels.  They will be cheered.  WWE would be better off going with what the crowd wants and turn Ronda into what she should have been all along and that’s a heel.  She is still not great on the mic but now that the fans booed her last Monday at Raw just go with it and let her cut a heel promo verbally attacking the other female wrestlers and the fans.  Flair is not a heel and we know Becky is not a heel as much as WWE wanted her to be it.  Let her continue to be a poor man’s Stone Cold Steve Austin.  With that if this angle comes into light in the next few weeks then let someone else other than Sasha and Bailey win the tag team belts.  Maybe the Riott Squad.  What is most interesting to me is that the leader of the squad is not representing the squad in the elimination chamber match.  Instead it’s Liv Morgan and Sarah Logan getting the spot.  Could this mean that Ruby Riott may challenge Asuka at Mania.  I mean if the Horsewoman angle is to get hot then Flair and Becky will need to move to Raw.  So let the Riott Squad go to Smackdown.  And its time for some new matchups too.   This women’s division is starting to get crowded and they will demand more TV and PPV time.

As for the men does anyone see any real juicy storylines or is it just me.  If you look at Raw what is there?  We know Seth will face Brock at Mania.  We are all hoping for Seth to take the strap as Brock is rumored to be heading back to UFC.  But would it surprise you if Vince kept the strap on him.  It wouldn’t surprise me.  What else?  Where are they going with Drew Mcintyre?  Braun Strowan?  Finn Balor?  Baron Corbin?  Lashley?  The tag team division is a bore despite a few good teams on the roster.  Are we please going to stop with this ridiculous Elias/Double J angle?  Where are we going for storylines.  This is the fault of Vince McMahon.  When you try to jam Roman Reigns down our throats for so long and not push anyone else look at the mess you have here now.  Oh I forgot.  Mojo Rawley is going to come out strong now.  Please.  This three hour show is a disaster. Now we will see Seth continue to cut great promos about facing Brock and maybe we actually see Brock on Raw 3 times before Mania.

Smackdown is a little better but not by much.  I expect Daniel Bryan to win the Elimination Chamber match but is his Wrestlemania opponent also in that match?  I don’t think AJ Styles gets another one on one match with Daniel.  Also no to Hardy and Mustafa.  That leaves Orton and Samoa Joe.  Right now there isn’t any sizzle for either one of them.  I am anxious to see where this Rowan angle goes.  Is this a prelude to Bray Wyatt returning?  R Truth is the United States Champion?  Is Rusev about to go back to being a heel?  Shane and Miz will break up and fight at Wrestlemania.  Is anyone excited about that match?  Miz is not being used right.  He is much better as a heel.  Let a more deserving tag team hold the straps and not the Uso’s or New Day or the Bar.  Unless I am in the minority I don’t see much juice in either men’s divisions.  Wrestlemania is 2 full months away.  With AEX seemingly going to pick up any disgruntled former WWE wrestler we need to see fresh angles and matchups.

Royal Rumble Reaction

ROYAL RUMBLE REACTION

As I sit here almost 2 full days after the 2019 Royal Rumble my reactions are mixed.  Based on my predictions I was spot on with the winners.  So from that standpoint am I disappointed in the results.  I had to think about this and after hearing and reading a lot of people’s opinions on this the same question was asked.  Is this a bad pay per view because you knew the winners before hand?  And is this the first time the Royal Rumble winner was predicted or pretty much known before hand.  I am going to say no to both questions.  But I did have some problems with a couple of the matches.

So let’s start.

I am going to lump both women’s matches together.  I knew Ronda and Asuka would open the show.  Becky had to get into the rumble.  So I knew Asuka would win.  But a clean tap out win was surprising to me.  I figured there would be a run in.  Ronda winning was also a given as we all saw on Monday Night Raw that Becky picked Ronda at Mania.  Both matches were really brutal and physical.  As is the norm now the women continuing are having better matches than the men do.  But Ronda is really rough in that ring and Sasha gave it right back to her.  Asuka is a gem and should be on top of the division.

Shane and Miz winning was also predictable.  Otherwise why are they a team?  I do expect them to have a falling out and have a match at Mania.  My only interest in this match was seeing what crazy spot Shane would come up with.  A Shooting Star Press.  That was amazing. Shane is almost 50 years old.  He is not an athlete or a full time wrestler.  He is not even in that good a shape.  But man does he do some incredible stuff.

The AJ Styles/Daniel Bryan match was a little too long and this needs to be the last time they wrestle for a while.  I just don’t see much more for this angle.  So I was not looking forward to this match.  I was surprised by Erick Rowan coming out.  Very interested in seeing what comes out of this.  I am hoping to see Bray Wyatt tonight since with Becky made her choice on Raw.

You know with Brock Lesnar really selling until he kicks out of Finn Balor’s finishing move to put him in the Kamora lock it makes you wonder why they had this match.  Finn gave it his all then had Brock stomp him after the match.  They made you believe that Finn could win this match but in the end tapped out.  Maybe that is good story telling but they made this belt not relevant when Brock has it.  I never thought Finn would win the match because WWE would never do something like that.  Looking forward to Brock being out of the picture for good.

The Women’s Royal Rumble match.  I loved everything about this match.  Until the end.  I loved that there wasn’t any legends in this match.  I definitely understood this for the first one.  Now it was not something that was needed for the second one.  I loved all the new women in this match from NXT.  Indeed the future of the women’s division is extremely bright.  They do out shine the men all the time now.  I hated how this match ended.  I knew Becky would win.  But Charlotte Flair is elite and she couldn’t beat a woman on one leg.  I know and understand the importance of building the Becky brand.  And she did tap out earlier in the night so maybe I am just nit picking here.  Charlotte will always be a big name but she seems to be on the losing end to Becky all the time now.

Now the Men’s Royal Rumble match I thought was so bad.  Firstly it ended so late that to have Elias and Double J of all people waste time as the 1st and 2nd entries was so ridiculous.  And Double J.  My god do we need to see him in the rumble.  If they wanted him in the rumble then let him and Kurt Angle go at it.  I think that would have got a real big pop.  And by the way can we put Angle out to pasture please.  Did anyone else see how weakly he was eliminated?  He can’t take the bumps anymore so it was almost as bad as him just eliminating himself.  The No Way Jose entry was a joke.  There wasn’t any surprise entries which might not be WWE’s fault.  But when the whole world knew that Seth or Drew would win there was zero drama and entertainment in this match.  And no the Nia Jax entry was not entertaining.  Who the hell cares.  And now after Raw she wants to fight the men.  Please stop this angle now.  As for the ending yeah it was late at night and we all knew Seth would win.  I have no real issue with the ending.  But the match itself was a huge boar.  Looking forward to Seth beating Brock at mania.

2019 Royal Rumble Predictions

With the Royal Rumble pay per view only a few hours away I am excited as we are now officially on the road to Wrestlemania.  This is my favorite pay per view as we usually see something special and unexpected or someone new officially joining the WWE.  Last year it was Ronda Rousey debuting after the first ever women’s Royal Rumble match or AJ Styles debuting a couple years back this pay per view sets the seeds for the biggest matches at Wrestlemania.  WWE in my opinion needs to up their game as AEW is now official and has big money behind it and will take some players off the WWE roster like Chris Jericho and possibly Dolph Ziggler.  Is it finally possible that since Vince McMahon defeated and bought out Ted Turner that there is real competition for WWE?  TNA was never real competition in my eyes despite having some names.  AEW if they get a big TV contract can be real competition for the WWE.

But this article is about today’s big pay per view and my predictions.  There will be more time to discuss WWE vs AEW.  I will only be making my predictions for the big matches.  The matches I will not predict are Rusev/Nakamura and the Cruiserweight match.  So here goes.

THE BAR VS MIZ & SHANE

Miz is so underrated to me.  He is great on the mic and knows how to get real heat and he is very good in the ring.  But this team is a face.  The Bar are good workers but I see Miz & Shane either winning the straps tonight or one screwing the other during the match.  It’s obvious they are setting up a Miz vs Shane match at Mania.  Shane usually has some crazy high impact spot during his matches and tonight should be no different.  Is it too early for an in match turn after a few weeks together?

Prediction: Miz & Shane win the belts tonight.

ASUKA VS BECKY

I expect this to be the first match on the official pay per view.  Why because Becky needs to get into the the Women’s Rumble match.  This is an easy one to predict as the plan seems to be that Becky fights Ronda at Mania.  With maybe Charlotte getting into that match too.  It will be a match where Becky’s momentum does not get slowed so expect a run in by Ronda or Charlotte.  But I don’t see the Mania match  as a title for title match.  Asuka’s Mania opponent is to be determined.

Prediction: Asuka with interference by Charlotte

RONDA VS SASHA

Ronda wins this match but the question is how good Sasha performs.  Ronda won’t lose before Mania where she will probably lose the strap especially if the wanting to have a child talk is true.  Either way did anyone think she was going to be a WWE lifer?  She came in and did exactly what WWE wanted her to.  One was to get them more exposure in the media and with fans which she has accomplished.  Secondly is I feel she has tried to make others look like they were good wrestlers too.  Does anyone think any of these ladies could realistically out wrestler her?

Prediction: Ronda

DANIEL BRYAN VS AJ STYLES

Hopefully this is the last match between them for a while.  It’s not that I think they don’t work well together.  I am just tired of this angle and it may have played its course out.  Daniel will retain and I could maybe see AJ switching shows.  He might need a change and Brock will be gone after Mania so someone needs to step up.

Prediction: Daniel in another great match

BROCK LESNAR VS FINN BALOR

Why did Bruan Stroman get pulled from this match?  Maybe they wanted Brock to keep the strap through Mania and how many times is he going to beat Braun.  I guess this is the best matchup they could think of.  Brock has completely made this title irrelevant and yes Roman Reigns leaving due to illness really screwed up their plans.  Brock’s mania opponent could be the Rumble winner.

Prediction: Brock.  But it would be amazing if Finn won the strap.

WOMEN’S ROYAL RUMBLE

This match will end the card unless there is something so special planned for the men’s match that they would have no choice to end the card with the men’s match.  Last year they deserved to close the show because the women earned it, their match was better than the men’s match and because of Ronda.  This year I am not so sure.  Right now only 23 names have been announced and no legends so far.  Everybody expects Becky to win this after losing to Asuka earlier in the night.  Might they throw a curveball and have someone else win?  As of right now I don’t see anyone other than Charlotte and Becky winning this.  I hope I am surprised.

Prediction: The legend of Becky continues to grow.

MEN’S ROYAL RUMBLE

This one is a little tougher to predict and for that reason I think the show ends with this match as we continued to get teased with the name of Kenny Omega.  I don’t expect to see him sign with the WWE but what if Trips convinced his daddy to give him obscene money and have him win the Rumble and put Brock out to pasture at Mania.  Would Omega be able to turn that down.  It’s wishful thinking but that is the kind of move that will jump start the year and the road to Wrestlemania.  This would be so out of character for the WWE to make this kind of move so I don’t expect to see it.  With only 20 or so people announced for the match the only other surprise entry that would get me going would be the return of CM Punk who would also most likely be promised to win the match.  If Roman came back for this match I would be happy to see him and know that he is getting better but unless he is returning full time I don’t want to see him in the match.  Give it to an up and coming NXTer.  So unlike the Women’s match where I expect the winner to not be announced as in the match until her music hits during the match in Becky I do as of right now expect the winner of the men’s match to already be announced as in the match.

Prediction: Drew Mcintyre is my first choice and Seth Rollins is my second choice.  But would love to be super surprised with a Kenny Omega entry and victory
